While the rest of those on the upper side of the planet are starting to expose some skin and ready to get tan on the hot summer, the people south of the equator are doing the opposite. They are preparing for harsh winter in this months, which means a multi-layered jacket and hot drinks, heaters or fireplaces, will all be in motion. This is the best time for these Northern folks to travel south and escape the scorching heat in their homes. A typical destinations then, would be in Chile, for its famous and numerous ski resorts, along its accessible cities and mountain range of the Andes. If you're going to a new place and settle there, it is important to know more about the do's and don'ts of a particular place because you might offend people due to your different background. Since you are the foreigner, you are expected to abide by these cultural rules and avoid doing any of the taboos. Like what they say, when you are in Rome, then do what the Romans do. Chile, like most countries in South America and the rest of the world, is crazy about soccer. With only less than two months left before the world's biggest sporting tournament starts, most tickets have already been sold out, while various communities are abuzz with news and speculations about their favorite players and teams. We aren't in the colonial days anymore (thank goodness!) but that does not mean you go back in time and relive the days. It's very possible if you still have structures and institutions that remind you of those years. Well, remind seems pretty inappropriate. In any case, you have to see the Hacienda Los Lingues, one of Chile's oldest hotels, dating back to the 16th century. It's located at the Central Valley south of Santiago. The earthquake that rocked Chile last February 27 has not damaged a great portion of infrastructure in the country, but the tourism industry has certainly be damaged a lot because of it. Quite naturally, international media extensively covered the damages and deaths that resulted out of this catastrophe, so potential guests from all over the world thought that there was great damage all around. Of course this was far from the truth.
