Hello ~ I am travelling to Chile. Got a question about electrical adapters. I have the 2-prong type that is the most common in the world, used in Europe, and I understand can be used in Chile.
Then I read that Chile uses the "grounded adapter" common in Italy, with 3 prongs. Which is it? Will the type I have be ok to use there?
Today is Dec 11-- hope you can answer soon -- I leave the 15th !

In developing countries you'll often find that electrical standards are either lacking, confusing or unenforced. Sockets may accept different plug types or sometimes even different voltages! They may have one or more earth holes but the earth contact may not actually be connected. In Uruguay for example there are 3 types of plug sockets (and even more plug types that you will never see a socket for but always have to use with an adapter!). Here you will find a mixture of all 3 socket types in most apartments or houses resulting in to a lot of "improvised" connections using adapters and extension leads.
Great care should be taken to avoid incompatible voltage and be aware that mixed connections between plugs and sockets of different systems can be hazardous. Take note that the voltage in Chile is 220v (similar to European countries which are either 220v or 230v). However US and Canadian appliances use 120v and so cannot be directly attached to electrical sockets in most South American countries without a converter.
In Chile you will find the type C plug (2 round prongs, typical in Continental Europe) and also the type L plug (similar to type C but with 3 round prongs). I have found that type C plugs can be used in type L sockets without adapters (but obviously the voltages must be compatible). Don't be surprised if you come across other less common plug and socket varieties also. If coming from US or Canada be sure to bring a voltage converter and an adapter to Euro 2 pronged plug. With that you will be able to buy any other adapters you need in Chile.
